Sing

I like singing! Singing’s my favorite part! — Buddy the Elf

I admire people with beautiful voices. I see joy when they sing, even when they sing the blues. It’s a gift. Natural, yet strengthened and refined with practice and training.

I sing but not “well”. I know in my heart that if I could belt out a tune, I probably would have been self-serving with “my” voice and be on a completely different trajectory in life. God is wise to divvy up His gifts accordingly.

Worshipping at home on a Sunday morning is a bit awkward at first. In a church building, the music is louder and I can blend with many other voices. The music in our church with a full band can be louder than traditional settings. Someone once said this is intentional so folks can worship uninhibited. When it comes to worshipping the Lord, reckless— without reservation or reserve is what He desires.

A lot of rich lessons have come in this season. Appreciating the sound of my family’s voices in our living room is one of the many things I’ve warmed up to. He knows each of us well and the von Trapp family singers we are not. He loves the fact that we are singing to Him, not to each other. He knows the sound of our voices and we know His. We are “wonderfully made”.

I pray we are getting comfortable and content with ourselves just as we are— naturally.

“I will offer You my grateful heart, for I am Your unique creation, filled with wonder and awe. You have approached even the smallest details with excellence; Your works are wonderful; I carry this knowledge deep within my soul.” Psalm 139:14

Here are a few good words that remind me how important singing is in our relationship with our creator.

Zephaniah 3:17 – The Eternal your God is standing right here among you, and He is the champion who will rescue you. He will joyfully celebrate over you; He will rest in His love for you; He will joyfully sing 🎶 because of you like a new husband.

Psalm 84:2 – How I long to be there—my soul is spent, wanting, waiting to walk in the courts of the Eternal. My whole being sings 🎶 joyfully to the living God.

Psalm 138:1 [ A song of David. ] To You, Lord, I give my whole heart, a heart filled with praise, for I am grateful; before the gods, my heart sings 🎶 praises to You and You alone.

There is a wonderful quote that I just can’t find at the moment. It goes something like this—

We look at the stars with awe and wonder, marveling at creation but fail to see the same beauty when we look in the mirror.

I catch myself in self-deprivation often but change when I recall that verse. I hope this inspires you to be you today. I truly love you— Lisa
